SANDRA ORGAN DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS – I HAVE A DREAM
Two Performances – February 17 – 18, 2005 – 7:30 p.m. –
Hobby Center
Houston, TX – November 22, 2004 –
“Dance really can tell a story – without words!” exclaimed an excited 16-yr.old. Helping young and old alike to discover the
stories in concert dance is part of the mission of the Sandra Organ Dance Company – to present works that are fresh, accessible, enlightening, entertaining, and often interactive.
This season, SODC’s 7th Annual Black History Month Project begins with Martin Luther King JR’s “I Have a
Dream” speech. Using the speech as a starting point, SODC worked with students and seniors, eliciting their dreams through the creative use of words and movement. Thus inspired, SODC dancers then
incorporated those dreams and memories of dreams into a choreographed piece that is a highlight of this year’s performance. In addition, SODC will also reprise Steve Rooks’ “Minijean’s Song”, a
narrative work based on an untold story of the Little Rock Nine.
Sandra Organ is the Artistic Director of Sandra Organ Dance Company,
a contemporary ballet ensemble founded in 1998. She had a 15 year career as Houston Ballet’s first African-American ballerina, and as a soloist for 12 years, she danced in theatres all over the world.
The mission of this dance company is to promote contemporary dance, educate the public and attract a diverse audience. Its distinctive choreographic style offers a blend of contemporary and neoclassical
dance forms, themes and music performed in both traditional and nontraditional urban venues.
Two performances are scheduled: Thursday, February 17, and Friday, February, 18, both at 7:30 p.m.
in Zilka Hall of the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available by calling 713-315-2525 or online at

Sandra Organ Dance Company is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston and the Texas Commission on the Arts through the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County, as
well as The Houston Endowment and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Omicron Omega Chapter. SODC is a participant in the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County’s MODE Arts Business Incubator
Program.
